A group of former Ethereum Foundation researchers has launched ETHLabs, a new independent nonprofit research and development organization focused on accelerating Ethereum’s role as a global financial settlement layer.
The initiative is backed by major crypto players including BitMine, SharpLink, and Joseph Lubin.
The launch comes during a period of significant transition for the Ethereum ecosystem, as the Ethereum Foundation continues shifting toward a smaller and more focused role, leaving more room for external organizations to drive research and development.
What ETHLabs Aims to Do
According to a June 22 announcement, ETHLabs was founded by five former Ethereum Foundation researchers with the goal of helping make Ethereum the core settlement layer for global finance.
The organization plans to serve as a bridge between application developers and the core protocol, helping translate real world needs into shared infrastructure and standards.
One of the founders, Julian Ma, explained that he sees this moment as critical for Ethereum’s long term growth. After spending four years at the Ethereum Foundation, he said he believes Ethereum is in its strongest position yet to become the foundational layer for global financial systems.
His focus at ETHLabs will center on strengthening infrastructure and supporting builders across the ecosystem. The organization also intends to improve distribution and adoption of Ethereum based applications and assets.
Other founding members include Josh Rudolf, Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnab Monnot, and Caspar Schwarz-Schilling.
Leadership Shifts Across the Ethereum Ecosystem
The creation of ETHLabs follows several high profile departures from the Ethereum Foundation in recent months. Notable exits include Tim Beiko, Tomasz Stanczak, John Stark, Trent Van Epps, and most recently Hsiao-Wei Wang.
Despite speculation around these departures, Ryan Berckmans suggested the exits reflect internal strategic differences rather than declining confidence in Ethereum itself.
Broad Industry Support
ETHLabs has attracted support from more than 50 individuals and organizations.
Anchor funders include BitMine, SharpLink, and Joseph Lubin, while contributors include SNZ and Octant.
Community supporters include Hayden Adams of Uniswap, along with Haseeb Qureshi and Tom Schmidt from Dragonfly.
Several current Ethereum Foundation contributors are also involved, including Alex Stokes and Barnabas Busa. Other major ecosystem participants include Coinbase, Polygon, and zkSync.
Ethereum’s Decentralized Future
The Ethereum Foundation acknowledged the launch and described it as part of a broader trend of new organizations stepping in to help advance the network.
Vitalik Buterin has previously emphasized that the Ethereum Foundation is not the center of Ethereum but simply one participant within a much larger ecosystem.
According to Buterin, the Foundation’s move toward a leaner structure is intentional, allowing experienced contributors to build outside the organization while attracting new capital and innovation into the broader Ethereum ecosystem.#crypto#cryptonews https://coinsignals.net https://t.me/coinsignalpublic
