Coinbase is reducing its workforce by roughly 14 percent as it adapts to shifting market conditions and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on X, CEO Brian Armstrong said the decision was driven by two main factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smaller Teams Taking on Larger Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armstrong pointed to ongoing volatility in the crypto market as a key reason. While Coinbase remains financially strong, its performance continues to fluctuate from quarter to quarter. With the market currently facing a downturn, the company is aiming to cut costs and position itself as more efficient and agile ahead of its next growth cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasized the rapid transformation brought by artificial intelligence. Engineers can now complete tasks in days that once required weeks, while non technical teams are increasingly capable of writing code and automating workflows. According to Armstrong, this shift has significantly boosted productivity and enabled smaller teams to deliver greater output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described this moment as a major turning point not just for Coinbase but for businesses overall, adding that delaying action could be riskier than making early adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the restructuring, Coinbase plans to simplify its organizational structure. The number of management layers will be reduced to no more than five levels below the CEO and COO to improve speed and decision making. Leaders will oversee larger teams and take on more direct accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company will also phase out roles focused solely on management and move toward compact, AI driven teams. This includes experimenting with very small team setups, where a single individual may handle multiple functions such as engineering, design, and product development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees affected by the layoffs will be notified via personal email and invited to meet with HR and senior leadership. Access to company systems has already been restricted for security reasons. Impacted workers will receive severance packages, including a minimum of 16 weeks of base pay in the United States, additional compensation based on tenure, equity vesting, and temporary healthcare coverage. Support will also be provided for employees on work visas and those based outside the US in line with local regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI Transformation Fuels Industry Wide Job Cuts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coinbase is not alone in making such changes. Several crypto firms have reduced staff this year as they shift toward AI focused operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Gemini cut about 30 percent of its workforce in March, while Crypto.com reduced its staff by 12 percent during the same period, both citing the need to adapt to AI driven changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
