eased its proposed regulations for stablecoins, revising its final policy framework after concerns emerged that earlier rules could hinder growth in the digital asset sector.

The updated approach is intended to provide clearer and more practical guidelines for stablecoin issuers operating within the United Kingdom’s evolving digital payments ecosystem.

More Flexible Rules for Stablecoin Issuers

One of the most significant changes is the Bank of England’s decision to abandon its earlier proposal to cap how much users could hold in stablecoins.

Instead, the central bank will now focus on limiting total issuance per stablecoin, with the initial threshold set at $52.8 billion.

According to Sarah Breeden, the revised framework marks an important step toward encouraging more innovation and expanding payment options in the UK.

The central bank said the new structure gives systemic stablecoin issuers more room to operate efficiently while supporting larger transaction volumes and broader adoption.

Reserve Requirements Adjusted

The Bank of England also revised rules around reserve backing.

Under the updated framework, stablecoin issuers can now hold 70% of reserve assets in short term government debt, up from the previous 60% limit.

The remaining reserve assets must be held as deposits with the central bank, though these balances will not generate interest.

Breeden emphasized that long term innovation depends on public trust.

She stated that the updated rules are designed to strengthen confidence in stablecoins by ensuring fast redemption processes, stronger consumer protections, and reliable central bank oversight.

Central Bank Still Warns of Risks

Despite adopting a more flexible approach, the Bank of England remains cautious about the broader impact of stablecoin adoption.

The central bank noted that stablecoins could improve payment efficiency, especially for faster and cheaper cross border transactions.

However, officials also warned that widespread stablecoin adoption could reduce traditional bank deposits, potentially affecting lending activity and borrowing costs across the financial system.

Even with these concerns, stablecoins continue gaining traction across both crypto and traditional finance.

Many industry leaders increasingly view them as valuable tools for improving liquidity management, unlocking working capital, and enhancing treasury operations.

A recent survey by Ripple found that 72% of institutions believe offering stablecoin related services will be essential to staying competitive in the evolving financial landscape.#crypto#cryptonews https://coinsignals.net <a
