Algorand Targets Full Quantum Resistance by 2027

Algorand has unveiled plans to become fully quantum resistant by the end of 2027 as concerns over quantum computing threats continue to grow across the crypto industry.

The proof of stake blockchain said it is actively working to strengthen its security against both current and future threats by adopting post quantum cryptography.

According to the network’s latest blog post, quantum computing presents a serious long term risk to blockchain security. In response, Algorand has introduced a detailed roadmap outlining its progress, research, milestones, and implementation strategy for transitioning to post quantum security.

Algorand Accelerates Quantum Security Transition

Google’s Quantum AI division recently identified Algorand as one of the smart contract platforms capable of achieving post quantum cryptographic security.

The network already reached a major milestone in 2025 by processing its first transaction secured with post quantum cryptography. Algorand now aims to complete its full transition in less than two years.

The team noted that moving toward post quantum security requires careful timing. Transitioning too slowly could leave systems vulnerable to future quantum attacks, while moving too quickly could introduce risks by relying on cryptographic methods that have not yet been thoroughly tested.

The first major step in Algorand’s roadmap is the launch of native support for post quantum accounts, scheduled for a protocol release in the third quarter of 2026.

Currently, Falcon based accounts enabled through the Algorand Virtual Machine already demonstrate that post quantum signatures can function on the network. However, these accounts are not yet supported at the ledger level.

Native support will allow the network to handle multiple signature schemes directly within the protocol, significantly improving flexibility and security.

Expanding Tools and Infrastructure

Once Algorand finalizes a standardized derivation method for lattice based post quantum keys, it plans to roll out updates across its ecosystem tools.

These upgrades will extend to software development kits, hardware wallets, and AlgoKit.

The network also plans to introduce support for additional signature schemes on traditional Ed25519 accounts, helping users transition more smoothly into the post quantum era.

A major focus during this process is ensuring future cryptographic upgrades can be integrated with minimal disruption to the protocol.

Post Quantum Multisignatures as a Key Security Layer

One of the most important elements of Algorand’s roadmap is the development of post quantum multisignatures.

Building on its existing multisignature framework, Algorand aims to introduce native multisig support for mixed cryptography environments by the end of 2026.

This would allow signature systems that combine both traditional and post quantum cryptographic methods.

The feature is expected to be especially valuable for institutional operations, treasury management, and high value financial applications where stronger security and flexible approval structures are essential.

In the final stage of its roadmap, Algorand plans to develop post quantum multisignatures into a broader policy layer built on independently verifiable signatures.

This system would support weighted approvals, hybrid setups combining classical and post quantum signers, and future cryptographic standards as they emerge.

The goal is to ensure protection against both traditional cybersecurity threats and future quantum era attacks.

Algorand is not alone in pursuing this transition.
